Termites Can Destroy Your Home!

When termites destroy wood, they are actually feeding on it. The main task of termite workers is to digest and distribute a compound called cellulose. This compound forms an important part of the support structures of plants, and it makes up about half of all wood fiber. Because they break down and recycle decomposing plant matter, termites are beneficial in their natural environment. Unfortunately, their feeding habits are a problem for humans when they target the wooden components of buildings.

Around 4,000 termite species have been discovered in the world so far. The most problematic varieties in Texas are the Formosan subterranean termite, the eastern subterranean termite, and the drywood termite. Subterranean termites live in nests below the ground while drywood termites infest the wood itself. Formosan termites are the most troublesome of the three, and their colonies can contain tens of millions of workers and soldiers. They are also known for their rapid feeding, and a sizable colony can destroy well over 10 pounds of wood in a single month.

Given enough time, a termite colony will have a severe impact on the structural integrity of a building.
